What on EARTH are you in business for ?

Over the next few months, and hopefully for as long as you decide you want to stay with me, I will blog specific examples of how you can increase your turnover. I’ll go into these in some detail so that you can set about using them easily.

However, first I’d like to challenge you to make one cataclysmic, fundamental, generic change to the way you and the people in your business, do business.

If you can embrace this concept, and maybe some of you have already, in which case this is affirmation you have it right; then this ONE change alone can change the way you do business from this day forward, and it won’t cost you a penny. It’s about a change in your state of mind, it is really, really easy to grasp

So then, let me ask, why are you in business, what is your purpose?

The answer I would usually expect to this question is “To make money”; and of course that’s an excellent answer. To make money.  Absolutely nothing wrong with money and all that accompanies it. We love money.

But I want to get you to think about something else.

I heard a story the other day from a marketing genius called Chris Cardell which illustrates perfectly what I’m driving at, so I’ll start with that.

“At one point in time, Microsoft had over 40 BILLION dollars liquid just sitting around in a bank account earning interest. So what drove Bill Gates to get up in the mornings?  Was it that he wanted to make more cash?

Clearly not. He loves his cash, don’t we all….. and the more of it the better.

Bill Gates is driven by the belief that by continuing to do business and to drive development of his products, that he is MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES. He is bringing REAL BENEFIT to people with his products.”

I spoke to a website customer of mine a few months ago, while we were designing his site; I asked him how he would describe what it was he did.

“I cure stress”, he said. “I cure stress”.

So what was he this bringer of immediate relief? A doctor ? Hypnotherapist? Did he sell herbal remedies? No. He was a packaging machine engineer. He’s the guy that visits a packing plant when the packaging machinery breaks down, and he fixes it. Now in the fast moving consumer goods industry where the packing company has deadlines and quotas to meet, and is being kicked by the manufacturers of the stuff he’s packaging, crisps, biscuits or whatever; my customer really does “cure stress”. He fixes the machine and makes sure that the quotas can be met.[1]

This mind shift, if you can adopt it in your own thinking and introduce it around your company, will make you PASSIONATE about what it is you do, and why you are doing it. The best thing is, this will NOT COST you ONE PENNY. Change the way you think about what you are providing and why you are providing it, and you are half way to winning the war.

If you can start to make this make this shift and become passionate about what you sell, you will be the best ever salesperson for your products and services, and it works for every business. You will be proud of what you do for a living. Proud of your products and services.

A Hairdresser could say “I’m in business to make people feel great”
Cosmetic Dentist “I’m in business to make people smile more”
Health Club “We re-charge people” or “we prolong people’s lives”

On a business card I was given today by another local web design company, it said “Hello, I’m Clive. I want to help your business grow.”

Why am I in business ? “To improve your turnover and hopefully improve your standard of life”

You may even get to the point, like me, that if I fail to convince someone that they need my products or services, and they walk away, I FEEL as though I’ve let THEM down by not being able to convince them that I can improve their lives.

So, I’ll ask YOU the question again. What are you in business for? What is the purpose of your business?

When you figure it out, write it in big letters and stick it all over your place of work…. and put it on your stationery and cards.

It can instantly change the way your customers look at you and will change the way you look at your purpose in business.

Too Lumpy - Niche it up

I see so many sites these days that are just too lumpy. By that I mean that the content covers the businesses entire product and service offerings. Now there's nothing really wrong with that per se, if for example you are an e-commerce store selling a range of goods; because your 'hook' is that you are 'a store carrying a range of goods'. That's what your website trades as. But what if you are a small business and you actually offer a range of services that otherwise might be only loosely connected, then you should look at Niche-ing up your websites to allow better targeting.

What if for example, you are a landscape gardener, but you also hire out groundwork plant, and you own a 4x4 off-road range as well ? Loosely connected and conceivably, you might want just one site to advertise your services. Is one site going to be the best thing to do?

Take a friend of mine the other week. He wanted me to look at his website and give an assessment on how it might be improved if at all.

Now this bloke was a master-of-all trades.

He was a butcher, a baker and a candlestick maker, and his site covered all of his skills.

It was a neat site, well laid out, informative and anyone directed to it would have seen an online brochure with good up to date content.

But what about that site being found on Google ? No Chance.

I advised him to create another three sites to deal with each niche, and leave the current site up and running with a link to the new sites. If you do want to get found by search engines, the first rule is the landing page content (usually your home page) has to be relevant to what the searcher is looking for, and also relevant to your Metadata (that's the keywords and site description hidden in your site back end code).

So if I'm looking for 'Candlestick Maker', it's unlikely I will find you on page 1 if Google has indexed your Home Page content as belonging to the web site of a Butcher. So if your site is covering too much ground, and yet you want to get new business by being found on Google, niche up and get each site relevant to your products or service.

Your website needs urgent SEO

If you own a small business with a website, or if you are planning to set up a website, you might not yet realise how difficult it is to actually get traffic to your site.

Many small businesses naively enter the web assuming that they will miraculously end up on search engines. All of them quickly find out that isn't the case.

To get on those engines, you have to go through a process called search engine optimization (SEO).

For years now, there have been tons of people researching just how SEO works and how they could use it to their advantage. If you want your business to pick up, you have to do the same.

The easiest way to do this when you're just starting out is to hire someone to help you with SEO.

This won't cost you a lot of money, and it will help you get an insight on just how the internet actually works, and it will be valuable knowledge that you can take forward; perhaps quite soon you won’t need to pay at all because you’ll also be an expert.

Techniques for search engine marketing change all the time, so much so that it literally takes full time attention for anyone to understand everything out there. Seeing that you probably don't have that kind of time, hiring someone that does SEO for a living would be quite logical. You can really benefit from their experience.

One of the first things that you will do with your SEO consultant is to determine who your target audience is and how they operate the internet. One integral part of this process is keyword research.

During that time, you will work out what words people are using to find your site and others like it. That way you can put those words on your site and in your marketing material, providing associations with you and the words. You will also use these keywords with the inbound links you put for your site on other sites so people click on them and already know what to expect from your services.

However, you should be aware that keywords are not the be all and end all as most amateur web builders think. The search engines use over 200 different scoring pointers to determine the ranking of your site; you need to get a lot of these right to be page 1 for your industry. Of course if you are a local business, you are competing against a smaller market, and so your chances are better, and the SEO is slightly easier, but just as finely balanced.

Don’t be fooled into thinking you are successful at SEO if you are on Page 1 for your own particular web address (URL). A URL is unique so it’s hardly surprising ! (However, that does raise another point that could fill a whole day’s seminar, choosing a good URL !)

If you are planning on building your own website because it’s FREE. Think again. A website designer will be able to optimize your site right from the start. The chances are you won’t be able to without lots of research.

Your SEO expert will show you that SEO is not just about what is on your website, but also how you put the word out about your website. It’s not all technical, and it can be a lot of fun, especially if you are a budding author !.

As your traffic begins to improve, you and your SEO chap will be able to monitor where you're getting the most success so you can direct your search engine marketing down that route. The consultant will draft monthly reports for you so you can see just what is happening with your website. It may take some time for things to pick up initially, but after a few months of work, you should see a great deal of benefits for your small business.
